51 Shakti Peeth Names and Locations in Hindi : प्रजापति दक्ष ने शिवजी से अपमानित हो बृहस्पति नामक एक यज्ञ का आरम्भ किया । दक्ष ने उस यज्ञ में शिवजी और अपनी कन्या व शिवजी की पत्नी देवी सती को छोड़कर सभी देवी-देवताओं को निमंत्रण दिया । पिता के घर में महायज्ञसमारोह हो रहा है, यह सुनकर सती ने निमंत्रण नहीं पाने पर भी वहाँ जाकर यज्ञ देखना चाहा और शिवजी से अपना अभिप्राय प्रकट किया । शिवजी पहले तो राजी न हुए, परंतु सती के विशेष आग्रह करने पर उन्हें जाने की अनुमति दे दी ।
सती अनुचरों के साथ पिता के घर पहुँचीं तो दक्ष ने किसी प्रकार उनका आदर नहीं किया । केवल इतना ही नहीं, वे क्रोध से अधीर हो शिवजी की निंदा करने लगे । सती को पिता के मुख से पति की इस प्रकार निंदा सुनना सहन नहीं हुआ। वे यज्ञ कुण्ड में कूद गई। शिवजी यह वृत्तान्त सुनते ही अधीर हो वहाँ पहुँच गये और वीरभद्रादि अनुचरों के साथ जाकर दक्ष को मार डाला और यज्ञ को विध्वंस कर दिया ।
शिवजी सती की मृत देह को कन्धे पर रख चारों ओर उद्भट भाव में घूमने लगे । यह देखकर भगवान् विष्णु ने अपने चक्र से सती का अङ्ग-प्रत्यङ्ग काट डाला । अङ्ग-प्रत्यङ्ग इक्यावन खण्डों में विभक्त होकर जिस जिस स्थान पर गिरे थे, वहाँ एक-एक शक्ति स्थापित हुई, उन्हीं सब स्थानों का नाम महापीठ पड़ा है । किस-किस स्थान पर कौन-कौन अङ्ग गिरा था तथा कौन-कौन भैरव और शक्ति वहाँ रहती हैं, तंत्रचूड़ामणि में इस विषय में जो कुछ लिखा है, उसकी तालिका निम्नलिखित है-
